LoRaWAN IoT technologies offer tremendous potential for environmental monitoring and combating the effects of climate change. With its long-range, low-power capabilities, LoRaWAN enables the deployment of sensor networks across vast and remote areas, providing near real-time data on various environmental parameters.

LoRaWAN IoT technologies offer a cost-effective and scalable solution for environmental monitoring, providing the data necessary to address environmental challenges and build resilience in the face of climate change.

Key benefits of using SenArch

  • Off-grid wireless sensor connectivity anywhere.
  • Faster and easier installation due to no cabling.
  • Deployment flexibility due to the system modularity.
  • Remote device management reduces operational complexity.
  • Going Solar means lower costs and greener operation.

    Environmental protection

One key application is in air quality monitoring. LoRaWAN-enabled sensors can measure pollutants such as particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and carbon monoxide in urban areas, industrial zones, and sensitive ecosystems. This data enables authorities to identify pollution hotspots, implement targeted interventions, and track the effectiveness of pollution control measures.

Water quality monitoring is another critical application. LoRaWAN sensors can monitor parameters like pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, and chemical contaminants in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. Early detection of pollution events or changes in water quality can prompt swift action to mitigate environmental damage and protect aquatic ecosystems.

LoRaWAN technology also plays a crucial role in climate monitoring. Sensors deployed in forests, wetlands, and other natural habitats can collect data on temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and biodiversity. This information helps scientists understand ecosystem dynamics, track changes over time, and assess the impact of climate change on vulnerable ecosystems.

Furthermore, LoRaWAN-enabled devices can monitor weather patterns and extreme events such as storms, floods, and wildfires. Early warning systems based on real-time data can alert communities to impending disasters, facilitating timely evacuation and reducing the loss of life and property.

    Client reference

    Roskilde Municipality

The Danish municipality, Roskilde Kommune, tested SenArch’s solar-powered LoRaWAN gateway for more than 6 months, where it helped to deliver data from sensors placed in local creeks and streams.

The goal was to measure the level of water and to provide early warning in the event of rising levels and the threat of flooding. Due to Roskilde’s nature and geography, the area is prone to flooding and the municipality therefore has an interest in monitoring the water levels constantly. By placing the SenArch gateway directly on a field close by – completely disconnected from the grid and using only energy from our sun – it was possible to place water levels sensors in locations where normally there is no LoRa-signal coverage.

By enabling water level sensors in these difficult locations, Roskilde Kommune was able to capture data and improve its ability to monitor and assess risk.
